A single outsourced techno-economic study runs $20,000–50,000. An engineer building the same thing in Excel costs about three weeks.

What it replaces

The honest comparison

untangle.bio is not a replacement for detailed process simulation, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It answers a different question, earlier: which route should we even be modelling?

Getting to a costed downstream route
Outsourced TEA study Weeks of lead time, one route, a PDF at the end. $20k–50k
Detailed simulation seat Aspen, SuperPro and similar. Deep, rigorous, and priced for a process engineering department. $10k–45k / yr
An engineer and a spreadsheet Roughly three weeks of loaded salary, and it goes stale the moment the feed changes. ~$10k
untangle.bio Pro Thousands of routes ranked on yield, purity and installed cost, in an afternoon. $600 / yr

Generate the first design

The generator builds, simulates and prices thousands of candidate downstream trains, then ranks them on yield, purity and cost. That is your first serious guess at the process, minutes after you describe the feed.

Then tune it in detail

Pull the best route onto the canvas and work it over: swap a step, adjust the operating parameters, rerun the mass balance and watch yield, purity and cost respond. Optimize and goal seek take it the last stretch toward your target.

Questions

Before you ask

What counts as a route-generation run?

One press of the generate button. Behind it, roughly 30,000 candidate trains get built, simulated and scored, so a single run is genuinely a lot of computation. Building flowsheets by hand and running the mass balance is unlimited on every plan, including Free.

Who qualifies for the Academic plan, and how do you check?

Anyone with an email address at a degree-granting institution — students, PhD candidates, postdocs, faculty. At checkout we match your email domain against a registry of roughly ten thousand academic institutions worldwide, so it works for universities well beyond the .edu world. If your institution is not recognised, email us with something that shows the affiliation and we will switch you over by hand.

Academic is for research and teaching. If the results feed commercial work — consulting, a company process, a fundraise — that is what Pro is for.

Why is annual so much cheaper than monthly?

Because of how this tool actually gets used. You design a process, find your route, and then quite reasonably do not need us again for a few months. Annual billing fits that rhythm and we would rather pass the saving on than pretend the usage is steady.

If your need is genuinely one-off — a single grant deadline, one diligence exercise — take the monthly plan for the month you need it and cancel. That is a normal way to use this and we are not going to make it awkward.

What happens to my projects if I stop paying?

Nothing is deleted. Your projects stay in your account and stay readable — you can open them, look at them and export them again if you resubscribe. You drop back to the Free limits for new work.

Is the cost model accurate enough to raise money on?

It is an order-of-magnitude model built on published equipment cost curves, per-operation scaling exponents and Lang factors for installation. That is the right resolution for comparing routes, sizing a raise, or sanity-checking a grant budget.

It is not a substitute for a vendor quote or a detailed FEED study, and you should not use it as one.

Can I use my own equipment costs?

Not yet. Costs come from our own database of published equipment curves, and you cannot currently override them with your own vendor quotes. It is the change we hear asked for most, so if it matters to you, email us and say so — it helps us decide when to build it.

Do you have team or enterprise plans?

Not today. Right now it is one account per engineer, and we would rather do that well than sell seats we have not built properly yet.

If you need several people working off shared projects, email us and tell us what you actually need. We will sort something out, and you will be shaping what the plan eventually looks like.

Do you charge VAT?

All prices exclude VAT. EU business customers with a valid VAT number are handled under the reverse-charge mechanism at checkout.

I am a one-person company and $600 is a lot.

Take the monthly plan for the month you need it, or email us. We would rather have you using it than not, and early users who tell us what is broken are worth more to us than the invoice.
